The Big Chill - In Words And Photos

A few of us went to The Big Chill festival the other month. We had Tom Brosseau playing there on the main stage, so we drove him and his manager Mary up. Here's my review of the festival:

The Big Chill. It's slightly embarrassing to tell people you're going to The Big Chill. Just because of that name - The Big Chill. I'd better not get to chilled - I don’t want to down a camomile and fall into a chill-hole. Or, maybe I'd trip over a spliff and break my karma.

But the festival itself is actually pretty good. It's a nice size, so walking from one end to the other, or from stage to stage, isn't a pain. The food stalls are of course well over priced, but we found some decent stuff; pies, those big yorkshire puddings with mash and sausages in, proper pizza. The bars weren't over-crowded and the toilets were pretty clean. Fine.

Musically there were some things that were definitely worth seeing. Here's a list of the bands/artists we rated:

David Byrne
Chris Cunningham
Amadou & Mariam
Wildbirds & PEACEDRUMS
Shackleton
The Ex
Tom Brosseau

The festival review is brief, I'll admit.

Above are some photos of us all. I'm (Tom Fatcat) the one with the shaved hair and Alex Fatcat is the one who looks a bit like Hitler (sans tash but w/ tattoos). Tom Brosseau is the attractive guy. Dionne is the attractive girl. Our friend Nic at http://sexsilencemelodyviolence.blogspot.com/ took the B&W photos (I took the colour ones), he's the one holding a camera. Dave H Fatcat is the one with a cute child. Norm has a beard/glasses and his two friends (I forgot their names on day one and I left it too late to ask again) are sitting at the table in the lovely group pic.

Domino Vs FatCat Match Report

So they got lucky with Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys, but it was some sort of fucked up miracle which prevented them getting a smashing at the 1st (away) leg of the Domino Vs FatCat football fixture.

FatCat dominated in the first half, which saw Alex Knight blast a 60 yarder past the terrible Domino keeper. FatCat's goalie Tom 'Everywhere' Allen broke his arm just before kick off but kept weak shots from drawing the game level until the wind took a turn against us and literally blew the ball past the line when we were busy helping a herd of ill kittens cross the road. Typical!

Half time was tough. The Domino players managed to open their oranges just in time to scoff them and run back on, whilst the FatCat team did 10 minutes each on the Samaritans line.

The whistle blew again and FatCat's dominance seemed to slip slightly. Domino scored (with a handball but we let them have it) to take the lead! Not at all shaken by the sudden turn around, Dave Thomas took the ball past everyone and levelled the game two a piece. Things looked bad for FatCat towards the end as 'Everywhere' Allen somehow snapped all of his fingers and smashed some ribs, but like a true champ he stood tall and flicked away some more petty attempts from the London label.

FULL TIME! 2-2. Next leg is in Brighton. News of a location and date will be on here soon.

The Twilight Sad - I Became A Prostitute - New 7'' released today in UK/Europe

"The first single from Scottish quartet's new album is a wonderfully dark indicator of things to come." - NME

"If it's OK to talk about something doing funny things to your insides, without sounding like a perv, then I'm saying that about this song it's heartwarming and unnerving all at once" -
Musicweek

"...they let their bilious aggression out of it's cage to roam free...brilliant and still very much untamed" -
The Skinny

"Forget The Night Ahead material is even more harrowing than predecessor
Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters – so if you think lines like “the kids are on fire in the bedroom” were dark, prepare to be scared sh*tless." - The Line of Best Fit

"A riveting exercise in articulating powerful emotions through sound." -
Clash Magazine

"Unflinchingly massive, unflinchingly gritty. Ace." -
The Fly

The Twilight Sad, the most singular of a new breed of British noise bands, move up a gear towards the release of their sophomore album Forget The Night Ahead (out 5/10/2009) with the release of a brand new single I Became A Prostitute.

The band have been busy previewing new songs on both sides of the Atlantic with recent US dates with Mogwai, and a UK headline tour in May which included heart-stoppingly intense performances at three Stag & Dagger events and two sets at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival. In September they are set to head back over to the US this time accompanied by
Frightened Rabbit and We Were Promised Jetpacks to begin an extensive US tour.

I Became A Prostitute falls at the more melodic end of the The Twilight Sad scale, a siren-like guitar line drags the ear in immediately; tremolo’d and unflinchingly dark. Graham’s vocals soar with an inimitable despair and desperation over a deceptively simple instrumentation of Joy Division-like depth and impact: each drum beat measured and thunderous, each squalling guitar riff at once apocalyptically discordant and beautifully harmonious. The song’s chorus is gripping, the band’s emotional input palpable.

In lyrical terms, the new album is possibly a darker set even than its hallowed predecessor
Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters. Singer James Graham’s portentous knack for forcefully delivering unsettling lines remains very much intact. Musically too, the forthcoming record is no less tumultuous, its broad cacophony stretching to produce the band’s most simultaneously melodic and abrasive moments yet.

FatCat Mix up on Arctic Circle now...

Brought to you by Arctic Circle Radio, the Circle is a new weekly pod-cast that takes you on a one-hour journey based on the most simple and significant of shapes. Every Circle is unique; formed from a guest curator’s musical landscape and they all share the same revolutionary quality: each one ends at the point where it began.
Edition 10 – FatCat Records mix by staff man Dave Howell:

There’s no grand concept or narrative guiding the choices – it’s all stuff from the FatCat vaults, a mixture of some classic older tracks with a few overlooked gems that deserve to be heard again. I just started out with a track from Black Dice’s ‘Beaches & Canyon’s’, which I think works as a great opener, and from there, just basically picked things that I felt fit alongside one another and kept.

Black Dice – Things Will Never Be The Same
Grain - Untitled (A3 from ‘grain Ep3′)
Mum – Don’t Be Afraid, You Have Got Your Eyes Closed
Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko – Vinyl Words
Janek Schaefer – Light Over Las Vegas
Set Fire To Flames – Your Guts Are Like Mine
Hauschka – Eisblume
Bjork Mit Funkstorung – All Is Full Of Love (In Love With Funkstorung Mix)
Dorine_Muraille – Dopees
Animal Collective – Banshee Beat
Crescent – Mica
Black Dice – Night Flight
Ensemble – Disown, Delete
Max Richter – When The northern
Silje Nes – Bright Night Morning
The Twilight Sad – That Summer At Home, I Had Become The Invisible Boy (Ensemble remix)
Max Richter – In Louisville At 7
Songs Of Green Pheasant – West Coast Profiling
